O.K., O.K., you set your goals, you had great intentions and you were very inspired to achieve them, but it’s been several weeks (months or years!) now and the results are just not what you had hoped for. Things have come up here and there getting in the way of your resolve; a vacation, a sabotaging spouse, an incredibly busy week, other major stresses and you feel like you’ve gotten nowhere. Well, guess what? Nowhere is now here. You are now here and it is not what happened to you last week or last year that matters. How you reacted to what happened to you is what matters, especially when you had unexpected problems of any kind. The goals and dreams you have are still important, and your plan to achieve is still vital, but this is real life, and yes, real life can be distracting!
Having a Positive Mental Attitude toward all those distractions, whether mental or physical, will be the indispensable factor to not giving up and to your ultimate success. Here are some strategies you can use to keep yourself thinking and acting positively and creatively, regardless of the circumstances!
Let go of the past!
First, whatever challenges you face as you take steps daily toward the successful achievement of your goal; it important to stay focused on the present and future rather than on the past. Instead of worrying about what went wrong, who did what and who is to blame, focus on where you are going, who you want to be and what you want to do. Get a clear mental image of your ideal successful self, and then take whatever action now that you can do to begin or keep you moving in that direction. Get your mind, your thoughts, and your actions on this future result and enjoy the process along the way no matter what happens.
Be “solution oriented”
Whenever you’re faced with a difficult challenge, focus on the solution rather than on the problem. Think and talk about the ideal solution to the latest obstacle or setback, rather than wasting time rehashing and reflecting on the problem. Solutions are inherently positive, whereas problems are inherently negative. The instant that you begin thinking in terms of solutions, you become a positive and constructive human being!
Look For the Gifts
Assume that something good is hidden within each difficulty or challenge. Dr. Norman Vincent Peale, a major proponent of positive thinking, once said, “Whenever God wants to give us a gift, he wraps it up in a problem.” I love this quote. The bigger the gift you have coming, the bigger the problem you will receive. But the wonderful thing is that if you look for the gift, you will always find it. Also, assume that whatever challenge you are facing at the moment is exactly the right challenge you need to ultimately be successful at achieving your goals and dreams. The challenges are there to help you learn something, to help you become better, to help you expand and grow. Trust this.
When you change your reaction to challenges, obstacles and distractions, and stay on the path by never looking back, you will be well on your way to the successful outcome you desire and deserve.
