Oprah often uses this quote from Maya Angelou “When you know better, you do better.” Is Oprah right? I believe so. Most people will make positive changes according to what new information they are presented with. And for women over 40, this is especially true when it comes to aging gracefully.
Personally, I felt great through my 40’s and the first part of my fifty’s. It was turning fifty-five that my struggle began, physically and mentally with getting older. I really didn’t think I’d have a problem with turning fifty-five as I had always felt younger than my years and pretty much breezed through every birthday without much physical change regardless of my lifestyle. So why did I start freaking out about turning fifty-five?
It could have been the fact that I was about to start a new job I was only taking to pay the bills, or that I was completely stressed out about our finances. I still didn’t know what I wanted to be when I grew up (or worse, I did, but hadn’t quite figured out how to make enough money doing it yet). It was also around that time that my midlife body was starting to betray me, seemingly overnight.
I decided I had two choices. I could just escape to my own island of pity and ignore this birthday altogether, or I could throw myself a big party and let my friends help me turn this birthday into something to celebrate. After all, not everyone gets to turn fifty-five, right? So that’s what I did. All my friends showed up with food, cards, and gifts. We ate, drank and laughed. To this day it is still one of my favorite birthdays! So why am I telling you this? Because getting older is a reality, you can’t stop the clock, but you can choose how you will deal with it. You can let yourself resign to the hype that it’s all downhill from here or you can take the bull by the horns and make sure these are the best years of your life!
The best way to make sure you are having a good time is to be healthy. That’s number one. By the time you are 40 or older, you have most likely experienced a lot of conflicting information regarding what’s healthy and what’s not. Remember when margarine was supposed to be good for you? And eating anything “light” with artificial trans-fat and artificial sugars was how to lose weight and ensure health? We didn’t know about Monsanto’s pesticides and what they were doing to our food supply, we didn’t know the doctor wasn’t always the best authority on things like nutrition, we didn’t know about BPA’s, PCB’s, heavy metals, fluoride or all the other toxins in our water supply. We didn’t know how toxic our cleaning supplies were or about the toxicity in what we were putting on our lawns or on and in our bodies. That ignorance has cost us in hormonal imbalances, allergies, unnecessary weight gain, lack of energy, and even chronic disease.
But, as Oprah says, “When you know better, you do better” and you and I know more now. Five years after that party and now entering a new decade, I can honestly say as I grew my awareness, I applied that new knowledge to my life. I’ve made some positive lifestyle changes, I feel great, have more energy, eat better, and am less stressed. A happy bonus is I’ve also lost weight naturally.
Thanks to new research and social media channels, updated information is readily available and at your disposal. You now have choices to make. You can either ignore this new awareness or you can take the bull by the horns and get your health and vitality back! There are thousands of ways to counter whatever damage took place in your uninformed years and you can reverse much of the damage that has been done.
